A man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs was being held in lieu of $1 million bail Thursday following his arrest for allegedly plowing into a family of four walking along a street in Irvine, killing the 44-year-old mother and seriously injuring the 49-year-old father and their two teenage children.
Kamal Akwette Attoh, 37, of Irvine was taken into custody following the collision, which occurred at about 8 p.m. Wednesday along Ridgeline Drive near Turtle Rock Drive, said Irvine Police Department Public Information Officer Kim Mohr.
All four victims were taken to hospitals, including one by helicopter to UCI Medical Center in Orange, authorities said.
The father had been trapped under the SUV, which had been going southbound on Ridgeline when it jumped a curb and struck the victims, according to reports from the scene.
