An East Los Angeles College student who was critically injured when a homeless man stabbed him on a transit bus in April has died of his injuries, the sheriff’s department reported Monday.
The victim died at a hospital on Sunday, according to Sgt. Vincent Plair of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
He was repeatedly stabbed about 10:15 a.m. on April 9 aboard a Montebello Public Transit bus in the 5700 block of Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles in an attack that was recorded on surveillance video, according to the sheriff’s department.
The suspect, 27-year-old Manuel Ortiz Jr., was arrested about 3 a.m. on April 12 and later charged with attempted murder and aggravated mayhem, officials said.
Ortiz, whose bail had been set at $1.35 million, is now being held without bail at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
“Based on the death, the suspect’s charges will be amended to murder in the first degree,” Plair said.
A possible motive for the stabbing has not been disclosed.
The victim has been identified in an East Los Angeles College Campus News report as 23-year-old Austin Zavala, who was stabbed multiple times in the chest while on his way to school.
