A man was in custody Tuesday for allegedly killing a 17-year-old girl who was found shot to death in a car that crashed into a building in San Pedro last month.
The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m. June 18 at 783 W. Sepulveda St., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Kayla Huerta of Wilmington, who had a 3-year-old daughter, was found in the driver’s seat of the car and died at the scene, authorities said.
“Ms. Huerta was with a group of people in the 700 block of Sepulveda Street,” police said. “The suspect was part of the group when he became upset at something that was said. The suspect then shot Ms. Huerta and fled the area on foot.”
The investigation led to the arrest on Monday of Luis Aurelio Morales, 25, also from Wilmington. Morales was being held in lieu of $3 million bail, according to jail records.
Morales is scheduled to be arraigned July 18 in a Long Beach courtroom on one count each of murder, assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call homicide detectives at (310) 726-7888.
