A scary few minutes at Los Angeles International Airport ended peacefully Monday as security officials spotted a man running across a runway towards a giant jet about to take off.

The intruder had apparently scaled a tall barbed-wire airport perimeter fence to gain access to the LAX airfield, but he was quickly taken into custody before he reached the Delta jet.

There was no indication of a motive or what the man had in mind when he entered the high-security airfield.

The incursion was reported about 1:40 p.m., when an airport police officer saw the suspect who had scaled the perimeter fence running across the runway, officials said.

The intruder, who was not immediately identified, approached the Delta jet that was staging for departure. The suspect was taken into custody within a few minutes, according Airport Police Officer Rob Pedregon.

Mechanics did a quick precautionary inspection of the plane that was then cleared for departure.

A search of the airport perimeter was concluded soon afterward and normal airport operations resumed by 2 p.m., Pedregon said.

The man was detained for interviews by airport police and the FBI and would likely be booked on suspicion of trespassing and possibly other offenses, the officer said.

A mental health evaluation was also likely, Pedregon said.
