A suspect accused of fatally shooting a man and wounding a woman early Thursday in the La Quinta Cove neighborhood led police on a pursuit into the Inland Empire, where he shot himself, but he is expected to survive and be booked into jail.
Stacy Rowan, 56, of La Quinta, is accused in the Thursday killing and police chase that began just before 8 a.m. at a home in the 54700 block of Avenida Vallejo. His connection, if any, to the victims was not immediately known.
Sheriff’s deputies found a man dead at the La Quinta home, along with a woman suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Rowan allegedly fled the scene in a blue Toyota Tundra, which sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers began pursuing a short time later on westbound Interstate 10 in Banning. Along the way, Rowan allegedly dodged a spike strip that CHP officers laid in the roadway somewhere near Oak Valley Parkway, and continued driving west into San Bernardino County, according to CHP Officer Darren Meyer.
The pursuit ended near Archibald Avenue and Inland Empire Boulevard in Ontario, where the suspect pulled over and shot himself, according to sheriff’s officials. He was taken to a hospital, and sheriff’s officials said he would be booked into jail “after his self-inflicted injury improves.”
Just before 11 a.m., a fire began at the La Quinta home where the homicide occurred, but it was unclear if the blaze had any connection to the ongoing investigation. The fire, which led authorities to briefly evacuate neighboring homes, was quickly contained by Riverside County firefighters. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting was asked to contact Investigator Manjarrez of the sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit at (760) 393-3530.
