An investigation was continuing Monday into an apparent gang-related shooting in Santa Ana that left one person dead.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 2:14 p.m. Sunday at 300 South Birch Street, where witnesses said a suspect fired a handgun at a vehicle, but when officers arrived, they were unable to find any victims or suspects, police said. Two men later flagged down officers in the area of Oak and First streets, directing them to a male victim.
Officers began lifesaving measures until Orange County Fire Authority paramedics arrived and took the victim to a trauma center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:08 p.m.
According to police, the shooting appeared to be the result of a gang rivalry. Police also said the suspect “confronted other motorists in the area prior to the shooting.”
Anyone who observed the suspect in the area prior to the shooting, was contacted or confronted by the suspect, or witnessed the shooting was asked to call the Santa Ana Homicide Section at (714) 245-8390. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
Police said tipsters might be eligible for a reward for information leading to the suspect.
