Law enforcement personnel raided a Yucaipa home and arrested a man suspected of committing a violent sexual assault in Riverside last year, police said Saturday.

The months-long investigation into allegations that rape, kidnapping and assault was committed in the La Sierra neighborhood in September led authorities to the home where the suspect Carlos Romero, 31, was hiding, Riverside City police said.

Romero, who was described by police as a transient, was arrested without incident by a SWAT team and U.S. Marshals on Friday.

After the arrest, officers said they also discovered that Romero had an outstanding warrant for allegedly violating his post-release community supervision.

He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center where he remained without bail.

“Detectives are looking into whether this suspect may have been involved in other similar crimes that occurred in Riverside and neighboring jurisdictions, including a recent carjacking from January 31, 2019, in the La Sierra neighborhood,” police said.

Anyone with information on other crimes Romero may have committed was urged to contact Detective Karla Beler at (951) 353-7138 or kbeler@riversideca.gov, Detective Stacie Ontko at (951) 353-7121 or sontko@riversideca.gov, or Detective Brandi Merrill at (951) 353-7120 or bmerrill@riversideca.gov.
