Two fugitives, one a well-known gang member, were jailed Saturday morning after being arrested by police in Pomona for failing to appear in court on felony charges related to a high-speed chase last month that ended in a crash in Diamond Bar.
At 6 p.m. Friday, members of the Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force spotted Anthony David Diaz, 27, of Pomona, enter the Indoor Swap Meet at 1600 E. Holt Ave., and waited for him to exit, according to PPD Sgt. D. Brown.
A short time later, Diaz was seen leaving the building with Marissa Maldonado, 22, of Chino Hills. Officers moved in and arrested Diaz and Maldonado without incident as they attempted to get into an awaiting vehicle, Brown said. Diaz was found in possession of methamphetamine and Heroin for sale.
On March 22, officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Maldonado with Diaz as a passenger. Instead of stopping, Maldonado fled at a high rate of speed with officers in pursuit on Pomona streets and ultimately into Diamond Bar, Brown said.
During the pursuit, Diaz allegedly tossed a firearm from the passenger window of the vehicle just before Maldonado lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a carport and several parked vehicles, Brown said.
Both were arrested and felony charges were filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office against Diaz and Maldonado, both of whom posted bail, but failed to appear for their next scheduled court date, Brown said. Bench warrants were then issued for both suspects.
“The Pomona Police Department takes a strong stance on apprehending fugitives for the purpose of improving the quality of life for the citizens of Pomona and bringing the accused before the courts to face justice,” Brown said.
