A 60-year-old man who allegedly drove through a stop sign while drunk and hit a Palm Springs police patrol vehicle, leaving an on-duty officer hospitalized with major injuries, is expected in court Wednesday.
Thomas Cain of Palm Springs was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence following the collision that occurred around 10:45 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Los Felices and San Rafael roads, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jackie Quintero.
The officer, whose name was not released, was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center with injuries that were described as major, but no other details were released and a condition update was not immediately available.
Cain was southbound on Los Felices Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign, according to Quintero. The officer was westbound on San Rafael Road in a 2011 Palm Springs police-branded Crown Victoria that collided with the left side of Cain’s Subaru Impreza, she said.
Cain, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, is being held at the Indio jail in lieu of $90,000 bail, jail records show.
Investigators asked anyone with information about the collision to call 760-772-5300.
