A man armed with a knife was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Gardena and later died at a hospital, authorities said Tuesday morning.
The shooting occurred about 9:55 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Rosecrans and Denker avenues, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which was assisting Gardena police with the investigation into the shooting.
Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the scene and took the man to a hospital, where he died, Navarro-Suarez said.
Police received calls of a man with a knife and when they arrived, the suspect lunged at officers, prompting an officer to fire once, striking the suspect, authorities said. A knife was located at the scene.
The age and name of the suspect was not immediately available.
No officers were injured.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting was asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
