A knife-wielding man in his 30s was fatally wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Gardena, authorities said Tuesday.
The shooting occurred about 9:55 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Rosecrans and Denker avenues, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which was assisting Gardena police with the investigation.
Gardena police dispatched to the scene on a caller’s report of a man with a knife and came upon a man pacing back and forth on the sidewalk, Gardena police Lt. Chris Cuff said.
“Gardena police attempted to contact and detain the suspect, who was uncooperative and was holding a knife,” Cuff said.
The suspect did not comply with an officer’s order to drop the knife and a taser did not subdue him, according the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, which reported that the suspect lunged at the officer, prompting the officer to open fire.
Los Angeles County firefighters transported the man to a hospital, where he died, Navarro-Suarez said. His name was not immediately released.
A knife was located at the scene, authorities said.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting was asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
