Authorities Thursday identified a 16-year-old boy who was fatally shot in an apparently gang-related shooting in the unincorporated Westmont area near south Los Angeles.
The shooting was reported about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of West 105th Street, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
John Michael Givan, Jr., of Los Angeles died at a hospital, the coroner’s office reported.
According to the sheriff’s department, Givan was walking in the area when a vehicle pulled up and a suspect got out and shot him.
No description was available of the suspect or vehicle.
Givan was the father of a 9-month-old child, friends and family members told KCAL9 at a vigil for the slain teen. He also was a drummer in the Washington High School marching band, played basketball for his school and was a ROTC member.
“He had an amazing future,” said Washington High School Principal Norma Bagalia. “He had a very bright future.”
Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
