A man who crashed his van into two equestrians in Lakeview Terrace, killing the horses and injuring the riders, pleaded no contest Thursday to three charges.
Rolando Garcia, 32, of Los Angeles, was immediately sentenced to 60 days in jail — with credit for time already served — and five years of probation following his plea to one felony count of hit-and-run causing injury and two misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run causing property damage, according to Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The two riders were struck about 9:40 p.m. Oct. 25 on Foothill Boulevard, near Wheatland Avenue. The horses died at the scene and the riders were taken to a hospital, according to Los Angeles police.
After hitting the two riders, Garcia crashed his 1998 Chevrolet Astro van into a wall where it became disabled, and Garcia fled without rendering aid or providing identification, according to police.
Garcia was arrested just after 5 a.m. the following day. He was released from custody shortly after his sentencing, according to jail records.
