Authorities Friday publicly identified a mother of two young children who was fatally shot on a roadside near her City Heights home, allegedly by her soon-to-be ex-husband.
Patrol personnel responding to reports of a loud argument between a man and woman that was followed by gunfire found Julia Serrano, 29, mortally wounded on a sidewalk in front of a pawnshop in the 3800 block of 46th Street about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, according to San Diego police.
Serrano died at the scene, said acting Lt. Michelle Velovich.
Police found the suspected killer, her 28-year-old husband, Fernando Avila, standing nearby and arrested him. They also located and impounded a gun in the area, Velovich said.
At least three witnesses reported seeing the suspect shoot his wife, Velovich said. The couple’s children were home at the time, but it was unclear if they also saw the woman gunned down.
Prior to the slaying, police had not responded to any reports of domestic violence involving the couple, Velovich said.
The victim was planning to serve her husband with divorce papers on what turned out to be the day of her death, her father told NBC7.
Avila was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Monday afternoon.
