A man accused of assaulting his 83-year-old former landlord in Norco and later causing a crash while fleeing from sheriff’s deputies remained jailed Saturday in lieu of $1 million bail.
Deputies responded to a report of an assault at about 4:10 a.m. Friday at a home in the 1700 block of Hillside Avenue.
There, a victim told deputies that a former tenant broke into his home, choked and battered him and tried to steal his vehicle, according to Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Torres.
The suspect was unsuccessful in taking the victim’s vehicle and instead fled in his own car, according to Torres.
The victim was treated at the scene for his injuries and identified the suspected burglar as Paul Stephen Otto, 27, of Norco.
Otto was later spotted outside the Norco sheriff’s station, where a deputy tried to stop him. Instead, Otto hit the gas and fled south on Hamner Avenue at a high speed, crashing into another vehicle at the First Street intersection, Torres said.
Nobody was injured in the crash and Otto was arrested.
He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of assault, cruelty on a dependent adult, burglary and attempted murder.
