A registered sex offender was arrested Tuesday outside an elementary school in Alhambra.

About 10:45 a.m., a student at Ramona Elementary School, located at 509 W. Norwood Place, told school officials a man was hanging around outside the school grounds and had tried to talk to the student, according to Sgt. Steven Carr of the Alhambra Police Department.

The incident and a description of the man were given to police, who went to the area and found the suspect, identified as Am Ta, 46, of Los Angeles, Carr said.

An investigation determined Ta is a registered sex offender due to a prior misdemeanor sexual offense, Carr said.

“Ta did not enter school grounds and did not have any physical contact with any students,” Carr said.

Ta was arrested for suspicion of misdemeanor child annoyance and taken to the Alhambra city jail.
