A 67-year-old woman suspected of driving under the influence was arrested Thursday after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian with her vehicle and fleeing the scene in Claremont.
Helen Scheuplein, of Covina, is accused of hitting James Radzik, 50, of Rancho Cucamonga, with her vehicle in the 1600 block of Towne Avenue near Syracuse Drive. His body was found lying on the pavement about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to Lt. Jason Walters of the Claremont Police Department.
Claremont police detectives observed Scheuplein in the suspect vehicle at approximately 5:55 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of East Foothill Boulevard in Pomona and arrested her without incident, Walters said.
Scheuplein was booked into the Claremont Police Department Jail for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death, according to Walters. She is being held on $100,000 bail, Walters said.
Scheuplein is scheduled to appear Monday in Pomona Superior Court.
