A 71-year-old woman was killed Saturday when she was struck by a bus while walking across a Long Beach street, authorities said.

The crash was reported at 11:16 a.m. at Magnolia Avenue and West Third Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Mamlekat Joseph of Long Beach was crossing south on Magnolia Avenue in a marked crosswalk with the “walk” signal when she was struck by a 2002 Bluebird Bus that was northbound on Magnolia, turning left onto Third, police said.

She was trapped under the bus when firefighters arrived, police said. Joseph was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver, a 25-year-old man from Van Nuys, remained at the scene and was interviewed by officers and released, police said. Neither alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving were factors in the crash, they said. He had a valid commercial driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Anyone with information was asked to call Detective Steve Fox at 562-570-7110 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
