A 31-year-old man accused of shooting at a motorist amid an apparent traffic dispute in Mission Viejo and holding deputies at bay for several hours was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and assault with a firearm.

Kyle David Leneker also faces misdemeanor counts of possession of methamphetamine and brass knuckles, with sentencing enhancement allegations for discharge of a firearm and the personal use of a firearm.

Leneker pleaded not guilty in the jail courtroom in Santa Ana and was ordered to return to court Feb. 21 for a pretrial hearing at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.

About 1 a.m. Monday, deputies were sent to El Toro Road and Wandering Trails, where a motorist reported that someone shot at his vehicle, but he escaped injury, said Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Leneker was allegedly driving erratically before boxing in the victim’s vehicle and getting out of his SUV to confront the man, whose name was not released. Leneker allegedly opened fire as the victim attempted to drive away, Braun said.

Deputies found Leneker about 2:30 a.m. in his SUV at Los Alisos and California Court and stopped him from driving away, she said. After deputies called for backup from SWAT officers and crisis negotiators, Leneker surrendered about 5:30 a.m., Braun said.
