A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday after an Automatic License Plate Reader alerted Manhattan Beach police that a vehicle was stolen and the occupants were considered “armed and dangerous,” triggering a pursuit in which a patrol sergeant was injured.

The license plate was scanned about 12:50 p.m. when the car entered Manhattan Beach on Marine Avenue. Officers attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated, according to Sgt. Tim Zins.

While pursuing the carjacking suspects, a sergeant crashed his patrol car near the intersection of Oak Avenue and 35th Street and was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, Zins said.

The suspects’ vehicle later crashed into another car near the intersection of Rosecrans Avenue and Market Place, Zins said. The man and woman then fled, but were quickly apprehended.

Their names were not immediately available.
