A 4-month-old child died and his twin and their 2-year-old sibling were hospitalized Tuesday, along with their mother and another adult, after being injured in a North Hills head-on crash that police allege was caused by that mother, who was suspected of driving drunk.

The crash was reported in the 15200 block of Nordhoff Street, east of Sepulveda Boulevard, at 11:55 p.m. Monday, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A preliminary investigation determined a Toyota SUV was eastbound on Nordhoff at a high rate of speed when it veered into opposite lanes and crashed head-on into another SUV, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Twins about 4 months old and a 2-year-old child were in the Toyota and taken to a hospital with moderate to serious injuries. One of those twins, a boy, was pronounced dead at 6 a.m., the coroner reported.

The driver of the SUV that was hit was also taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the Toyota, described only as a 23-year-old woman, is the mother of the children, and was hospitalized in unknown condition, police said. She is suspected to have been driving drunk, and will likely face charges, police said. Her name was not immediately released.

Police said they did not believe rain was a factor in the crash.
