A two-vehicle crash during a street race in the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles killed three men Monday, authorities said.
The crash was reported about 2 a.m. at Highland and Melrose avenues, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
LAPD Cmdr. Marc Reina said the motorists were racing one another.
“3 people lost their lives all because of street racing,” Reina wrote in a Twitter post late Monday morning. “The families and friends of those who died will be impacted forever. Obey the rules of the road. Any deviation is just not worth it.”
One vehicle hit a large palm tree so hard it knocked it over.
The drivers, all about 30 years old, died at the scene, said LAPD Detective James Dickson of the West Traffic Division. A man about the same age, who was riding in one vehicle, died at a hospital, Dickson said. A female passenger riding in the other vehicle suffered an injury described as non-life-threatening.
Information was not immediately available on the identities of the fatally injured men.
