A 37-year-old known gang member from Pomona was arrested Friday morning after police found guns and drugs inside a backpack he dropped while trying to hide from authorities.
Officers with the Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force around 12:45 a.m. were patrolling in the 900 block of West Ninth Street, a neighborhood that had recently been targeted with an increase in gang graffiti that suggested a current feud between three rival gangs, according Sgt. M. Medellin.
While on patrol, officers spotted a known gang member, identified as Luis Guerrero, trying to hide behind what turned out to be a stolen truck. At that time, he dropped a backpack and a metal object, Medellin said.
Officers stopped Guerrero and checked the area where he tried to hide and found a loaded gun and methamphetamine packaged for sale inside the backpack, along with a scale and hypodermic needles, Medellin said.
Guerrero was arrested on suspicion of various gun and drug charges and booked into the Pomona city jail, according to Medellin.
Officers found the owner of the stolen truck, who thanked officers for locating his property and quickly returning it to him, Medellin said.
