A Cathedral City man was behind bars Tuesday on $1 million bail, accused in the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy.
Officers received a call of shots fired at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday in the area of Avenida Juarez and McCallum Way, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.
Shortly afterward, police received a second call about a vehicle crashing into a tree in the same area. When officers arrived at the crash location, they found somebody inside the vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.
Police later identified the victim a 17-year-old boy from Hesperia, but did not release his name because he was a juvenile.
On Monday, detectives were able to identify a suspect in the case — Juan Garcia Landeros, 21, of Cathedral City — who was taken into custody that evening on suspicion of murder in the 33300 block of Shifting Sands Trail, police said.
Landeros remains in custody at the Indio jail on $1 million bail.
