A suspect was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of firing what appeared to be a flare gun at a Fountain Valley hospital, but no one was hurt, police said.
Officers were sent to MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center at 18111 Brookhurst St. at about noon, Fountain Valley Police Chief Matt Sheppard said.
“A suspect has been detained and taken into custody,” Sheppard said. “The subject fired what appears to be a flare gun in the air. The situation has been controlled at this point and there is no active shooter.”
Police did not immediately identify the male suspect or comment on a suspected motive.
The hospital issued the following statement:
“The safety of our patients, families and staff is of the utmost importance. We notified the police of suspicious activity outside of the hospital today. Police responded and resolved the matter. The incident remained outside the hospital and our patients and staff are safe.”
