A felon who’d been on the lam since allegedly stealing an occupied utility truck at gunpoint in Thermal nearly three months ago was behind bars Wednesday, sheriff’s officials said.
The carjacking was reported on Jan. 15 in the area of Harrison Street and Avenue 77, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators later identified the suspect as 29-year-old Sosafat Garcia of Thermal, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants and who sheriff’s detectives allege was also linked to a spate of agricultural thefts in the area.
Garcia was taken into custody Tuesday in Thermal with help from the Coachella Community Action Team and the Coachella Valley Violent Gang Task Force.
He’s being held at the Indio jail in lieu of $200,000 bail on suspicion of carjacking, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and possessing a stolen vehicle.
Court records show he is named in arrest warrants involving several pending cases, including a charge — filed last October — of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Garcia has multiple felony convictions in Riverside County, including receiving stolen property, according to court records.
