The mother and stepfather of two children who died in a Pomona apartment fire took their own lives shortly afterward, an official with the Pomona Police Department told City News Service Tuesday.
Thay Hung Leyva, 17, died at the scene of the April 6 fire from “thermal injuries and inhalation of products of combustion,” the coroner’s office said.
Her 13-year-old sister died on Saturday at a hospital.
The mother and stepfather of the two girls committed suicide on Sunday, but the location and method were not released, according to Aly Mejia, spokesperson for the Pomona Police Department.
Nearly two dozen firefighters were sent to the 1100 block of East Franklin Avenue about 10:35 a.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The girls were trapped in their bedroom, with the front door blocked by fire and the windows blocked by furniture and an exterior mounted window A/C unit, according to fire officials.
The girls’ grandmother suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to Mejia.
