A 16-year-old suspected car thief led police on a chase from Anaheim to Irvine Wednesday afternoon before giving up, police said.
Anaheim police spotted a stolen Volkswagen Golf GTI about 1:35 p.m. near Brookhurst Street and the Santa Ana (5) Freeway and attempted to pull over the driver, said Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer.
The motorist refused to stop and entered the freeway, leading police on a chase on and off the freeway through Anaheim and ultimately into Irvine, Carringer said.
At some point, police backed off the pursuit while Anaheim’s police helicopter continued to trail the suspect, Carringer said.
The teen stopped in Irvine and ran into a family member’s home on Irvine Boulevard between Jeffrey Road and Route 133, where the youth holed up for a time before surrendering about 3:15 p.m., Carringer said.
