A 43-year-old man was in custody Friday morning on suspicion of trying to kill his significant other and barricading himself inside a Garden Grove home.
Officers responded to a domestic dispute between a couple at a residence in the 8600 block of Meadow Brook Avenue, north of the Garden Grove (22) Freeway at 5 p.m. Thursday and found a 55-year-old woman outside the home and the suspect inside and refusing to come out, according to Sgt. Juan Centeno of the Garden Grove Police Department.
An investigation determined the suspect, identified as Joseph B. Delatorre, 43, choked and attempted to smother the victim before she was able to call police and run from the home without being injured further, Centeno said.
The victim told officers Delatorre had access to weapons, including a rifle. Officers tried to talk the suspect into surrendering, but he refused and a SWAT team was called to the location, Centeno said.
After hours of negotiations, Delatorre walked out of the home, but attempted to go back inside. A police dog apprehended him before he could return to the home, Centeno said.
Delatorre was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, then later booked at the Orange County jail.
The name of the victim was not released.
