A parolee who allegedly fired a handgun on accident while running away from police officers Tuesday in Indio was quickly taken into custody.
Guadalupe Mario Pizarro, 26, of Indio was taken into custody about 5:30 a.m. and booked at the Indio jail, where he was being held without bail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and negligently discharging a firearm, according to Indio Police Department spokesman Ben Guitron.
Police attempted to make a traffic stop about 4:30 a.m. near Indio Boulevard and Smurr Street for an alleged vehicle code violation, but the driver took off and subsequently crashed into a curb, Guitron said.
As officers approached the car, they reported seeing a male passenger — later identified as Pizarro — run away. Police allege he accidentally fired a gunshot in the process. A handgun was located near where the car crashed into the curb, according to Guitron.
Police also found two women inside the car and detained them, although additional information regarding their status and that of the driver was not released.
After searching the area but failing to locate the suspect, police received a call from a resident who reported seeing a man hiding in the 45-000 block of King Street, police said. Pizarro was arrested at the location without incident.
Pizarro has several documented felony convictions in Riverside County, including transporting and/or selling a controlled substance and resisting a police officer, court records show.
Pizarro is scheduled to make his initial court appearance at the Larson Justice Center in Indio on Thursday.
