A man who escaped a hospital during a mental health hold evaluation in Laguna Hills was arrested Thursday after allegedly trying to assault a deputy and stealing a patrol vehicle.
The man left the hospital Thursday morning, prompting staff to call 911, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Deputies found the man walking onto the San Diego (5) Freeway, and while they were speaking with him and trying to “de-escalate the situation,” he allegedly attempted to assault the deputies and stole a patrol vehicle, the sheriff’s department said.
He fled southbound on the freeway, and after a pursuit, was taken into custody in a residential area in San Juan Capistrano, according to the sheriff’s department.
He was taken to a hospital with injuries “sustained during the assault and collision,” and will be booked into jail “for charges to include assault on a peace officer,” the sheriff’s department said. It was not immediately clear when the collision occurred.
Further information about the suspect was not released.
