A man, who police say charged at them with a knife, was shot and killed, and a Culver City police officer was accidentally shot by other officers in Culver City Monday afternoon.
Officers were dispatched to the 8800 block of Washington Boulevard, near Landmark Avenue, about 2:25 p.m. regarding a call of an armed man, according to the Culver City Police Department.
Officers located the man at a commercial parking structure and he “attempted to elude them within a stairwell,” according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the shooting.
“A short standoff ensued and as the officers attempted to communicate with the suspect, he suddenly charged at the officers while armed with a knife,” Navarro-Suarez said.
The shooting occurred about 3 p.m. on the parking structure’s roof.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s department. His name was not released.
The officer was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound, which was caused by friendly fire, according to a broadcast report. His vital signs were reported to be stable, the Culver City Police Department said.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the sheriff’s department are investigating the shooting.
