A man who allegedly stabbed a deputy was fatally shot by the deputy Friday afternoon in Rancho Mirage.
The deputy was responding to a suspicious person call about 2:40 p.m. in the 70000 block of Tamarisk Lane, near Palm View Road, and made contact with a man who matched the suspect’s description, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect allegedly assaulted and stabbed the deputy, and the deputy shot him, the sheriff’s department reported.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s department. His name was not released.
The injured deputy, whose vital signs were reported to be stable, was taken to a hospital, the department said.
Per the department’s policy, the deputy will be placed on administrative leave.
A mobile command station, along with forensics and other sheriff’s vehicles, lined the stretch of Tamarisk Lane where the shooting was reported. The street remained closed to thru traffic as of 5 p.m. while investigators worked the scene.
