A Bell Gardens woman was sentenced Tuesday to three years in state prison for a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in downtown Los Angeles.
Maria Perez, 59, was sentenced immediately following her no contest plea to a felony count of hit-and-run driving resulting in the death of Byern Smith, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The 51-year-old man was killed May 7 as he walked near Seventh and Lawrence streets.
Perez initially got out of her car, but subsequently fled the scene of the crash and did not try to identify herself or render aid to Smith, according to Los Angeles police.
Perez was arrested May 17 after a sergeant spotted her 2005 Scion xB, which matched the description of the car that struck Smith, according to police.
