Murder and other charges were filed Wednesday against a 39-year-old San Bernardino man accused of gunning down his wife and wounding his teenage son in Eastvale.
Rahman Leon Hunter was arrested late Sunday morning, about 10 hours after the shooting at a residence in the 7200 block of Lazare Court, near Archibald Avenue. Eastvale is a city in Riverside County a few miles south of Ontario International Airport.
Along with murder, Hunter is charged with attempted murder and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.
The defendant is being held without bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning and is slated to make his initial court appearance Thursday at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Brosche, the attack happened about 1 a.m. Sunday during a domestic dispute. Brosche alleged that Hunter pulled a gun and shot 37-year-old Chiana Hunter and their 15-year-old son.
Witnesses called 911, and deputies reached the location moments later, finding the victim in grave condition. First responders tried to revive her, but she died at the scene, according to the sergeant.
The couple’s son was taken to Riverside Community Hospital and is expected to survive, authorities said.
Brosche alleged that Hunter fled in a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, heading north to Hesperia, where he was apprehended without incident hours later.
The defendant has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County. However, he has a misdemeanor shoplifting conviction in San Bernardino County, according to court records.
