Coroner’s officials Sunday released the name of an armed man who was fatally shot Thursday by deputies after allegedly kidnapping a woman at gunpoint from the Vermont Vista area of South Los Angeles and possibly raping her in his vehicle before deputies arrived.

The suspect was identified as Dana Young Jr., 47, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, which added that it had no place of residence for Young.

A friend of the victim who saw Young allegedly kidnap her at gunpoint from 103rd and Figueroa streets in the Vermont Vista area called authorities and followed the suspect’s silver SUV to the area of 127th Street and Budlong Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Young exited his vehicle and shot at the informant, the sheriff’s department reported. He then allegedly shot at another occupied vehicle in the area, then entered his own vehicle with the victim still inside and drove to a Park and Ride lot in the 11600 block of Vermont Avenue. That’s where deputies, responding to a report of “assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping and possible rape,” located the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s department.

The vehicle’s windows were fogged and deputies saw the victim unclothed in the back seat, the sheriff’s department reported. Young allegedly got into the front seat and tried to drive away, but the victim was able to escape out of the rear door as the vehicle accelerated.

Deputies rescued the woman, and Young drove northbound on Vermont Avenue to 108th Street with deputies in pursuit. He crashed the SUV into a gate at the end of a cul de sac on 108th Street, exited the vehicle and ran eastbound when at least one deputy shot him, according to the sheriff’s department.

Young, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:12 a.m., according to the coroner’s office. A firearm was recovered, and no deputies were injured.
