A woman died and a man was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash in Garden Grove, authorities said Monday.

The woman, a passenger in the car, was identified as Salena Hernandez, 41, of Pomona, said Supervising Deputy Coroner Larry Esslinger.

The crash occurred just before 6 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Trask Avenue, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The 42-year-old man behind the wheel, whose identity was not released, was driving north on Brookhurst and crashed into a pole, Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene, Whitney said.

The driver was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was in critical condition but is expected to survive, he said.

Traffic investigators will be working to determine if speed was a factor in the crash, or drugs and/or alcohol.

Whitney said the driver had just passed through a green light, but then veered to the right for an unknown reason and slammed into a traffic signal pole, Whitney said.

Anyone with information helpful to investigators was asked to call Traffic Investigator Paul Ashby at 714-741-5823.
