A 24-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in Anaheim.
Miguel Angel Reyes was convicted Oct. 5 of voluntary manslaughter in the killing of 17-year-old Jolina Ramirez of Anaheim. Jurors also found true a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon.
Police were called on May 16 at 8:30 p.m. regarding a fight, said Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer.
The conflict started in Ponderosa Park, where the victim was with a group of friends, he said. The dispute escalated, and the victim hurled a brick that hit Reyes while they were arguing, prompting him to stab the teen at Leatrice Lane and Haster Street, according to police and prosecutors.
Ramirez was rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, Carringer said.
Reyes was out on bail at the time of the stabbing. He had been convicted in March of misdemeanor vandalism, but jurors hung on a gang enhancement and he was released while awaiting a retrial in that case.
