Authorities Thursday identified a woman who died in a multi-vehicle crash involving a Metro bus in the unincorporated Florence-Firestone area near South Los Angeles.
The crash occurred about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday on Compton Avenue south of 81st Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Margarita Reyes, 54, of Los Angeles, who was riding in a car involved in the crash, died at scene, according to the CHP.
One of the vehicles involved in the crash was a Line 55 Metro bus, according to Jose Ubaldo, senior communications officer for Metro Media Relations. Nobody on the bus was injured.
According to the CHP, Reyes was riding in a 2014 Nissan that was northbound on Compton Avenue when the car collided with a southbound 2005 Toyota driven by John Cardenas, 23, of Compton.
“For an undetermined reason (Cardenas) drove into oncoming traffic,” and the front of the Toyota hit the front of the 2014 Nissan, the CHP said in a statement.
The Toyota then hit the front of a 2015 Nissan that was northbound on Compton Avenue. The 2015 Nissan then hit the side of the bus, which was southbound on Compton Avenue, the CHP reported.
Cardenas, who suffered major injuries, was not arrested, the CHP reported.
The driver of the 2014 Nissan, 20-year-old George Ortega of Los Angeles, suffered major injuries, the CHP reported.
The driver of the 2015 Nissan, 39-year-old Faustino Acosta of Los Angeles, also suffered major injuries, as did one of his passengers. Three other passengers in the 2015 Nissan suffered moderate injuries.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
