A 61-year-old Norwalk woman was fatally struck by a pickup truck Thursday evening when she tried to cross a street illegally near the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in South El Monte, authorities said.
About 6:20 p.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol’s East Los Angeles Area Office responded to the area of San Gabriel and Rosemead boulevards and were told by a witness the victim was standing in the center median and as the 2001 GMC truck approached, the pedestrian attempted to cross the street and was struck, according to CHP Sgt. M. Steadmon.
The woman wasn’t breathing when firefighters arrived and died at the scene, according to Inspector Henry Narvaez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The driver of the truck, a 28-year-old La Puente man, stopped and stayed until authorities arrived, Steadmon said.
The name of the victim was not disclosed.
