A man in a security guard uniform was struck and killed early Wednesday by a suspected drunken driver who was hospitalized with serious injuries, Anaheim police said.
Officers responded to the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Katella Avenue about 1:15 a.m. They found the victim down in a marked crosswalk and the suspect’s vehicle, a white Astro van, about a block away, crashed head-on into a palm tree in front of the Islander Inn and Suites at 424 W. Katella Ave., said Anaheim police Sgt. Jacob Gallacher.
The suspect — a 38-year-old man from Norwalk whose name was not immediately released — was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, Gallacher said. When he is medically cleared, he is expected to be booked on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, the sergeant said.
Investigators were working to confirm the identity of the victim, who was in his 50s and is believed to have lived in Orange. It was not clear if he worked as a security guard, Gallacher said.
The suspect drove through a red light before striking the victim, who was walking southbound in a crosswalk of Harbor and was “thrown quite a distance,” Gallacher said.
