A 28-year-old man who was accused of kidnapping and raping a woman in Santa Ana on Christmas Eve three years ago accepted a plea deal Tuesday in which he admitted a robbery count and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Oscar Vela pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery, and felony counts of kidnapping to commit rape, forcible rape in concert or by foreign object and rape were dismissed.
Vela and another unnamed suspect were accused of attempting to solicit sex from the victim just before 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 24, 2017, at 11th and Bewley streets.
When she declined, she was forced in a headlock into the backseat of the vehicle they were in and driven to another location, where she was sexually assaulted before she managed to escape, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna alleged when Vela was arrested in June 2019. The pair was also accused of robbing the woman.
Vela has been in custody since June 26, 2019.
