A hiker was injured while climbing in the hills south of Hemet Thursday, requiring Riverside County firefighters to mount a rescue operation.
The “hiker down” call was received about 12:20 p.m. in the area of Simpson Park, near the Ramona Bowl, according to county fire officials.
The victim, whose identity was not released, was with several other hikers when he suffered an unspecified injury, according to reports from the scene. Because of the steep terrain, crews on the ground could not immediately find the hiker, and a sheriff’s helicopter was sent to the location.
The victim was soon located atop a rock with the other hikers, and a Cal Fire helicopter with hoist capability was summoned to perform an airlift.
