Police Sunday said three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the discovery of a motorist found fatally wounded inside his BMW in Santa Ana.
Officers dispatched at 9:12 p.m. Saturday regarding a shooting call in the area of MacArthur Boulevard and Bear Street located a car that was struck by gunfire and a motorist suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to a watch commander at the Santa Ana Police Department.
A woman, a passenger inside the vehicle, was not injured. Paramedics rushed the motorist to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
A witness told officers in a subsequent investigation that he saw a green SUV accelerate and drive next to a gray BMW that was going eastbound on MacArthur Boulevard.
“He then heard three to five gunshots and observed the green vehicle drive southbound on Bear Street from MacArthur Boulevard,” according to police.
The BMW reportedly came to a stop in the 1600 block of West MacArthur Boulevard, facing east.
Another witness also reported hearing five gunshots and seeing a green SUV speeding away southbound on Bear Street from MacArthur Boulevard.
Responding patrol officers spotted a green Chevrolet Trailblazer going north on Harbor Boulevard from Warner Avenue and pulled it over, detaining three men inside the SUV.
“Both witnesses positively identified the green Chevy Trailblazer as the same vehicle seen fleeing the scene of the shooting,” police said. “All three occupants were transported to the Santa Ana Police Department for further investigation.”
Santa Ana residents Alfredo Ivan Pulido, 22; Leonel Diaz, 21 and Jason Garcia, 21 were arrested on suspicion of murder, assault with a firearm on a person and additional gang-related charges, said police, adding that the motive for the shooting appeared to be gang-related.
Santa Ana homicide detectives urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to call them at 714-245-8390 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.
