Authorities Tuesday identified a motorist who was killed in a fiery crash on the Ventura (101) Freeway in Sherman Oaks in which his SUV rear-ended a box truck whose driver was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.
The collision was reported at 1:50 a.m. Monday on the eastbound 101 at Van Nuys Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Joshua Ajer, 33, of Ventura, died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office and the CHP. He was alone in the vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
According to the CHP, an arriving officer found the Freightliner box truck stopped in the No. 4 lane of the freeway with the SUV partially beneath it. As the officer approached the wreckage, the SUV caught fire, and the officer put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.
The driver of the truck, identified as 29-year-old Michael Snee of Beverly Hills, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, according to the CHP and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
A CHP officer at the scene said the box truck had stopped in the No. 4 lane with what the driver claimed were mechanical issues.
