A transient pleaded not guilty Wednesday to raping a homeless woman who was subsequently found dead on a Pomona street.
Jerome Perrin, 41, is charged with one count each of kidnapping to commit rape, rape of a person who was unconscious or asleep, oral copulation of a person who was unconscious or asleep and sexual penetration of a person who was unconscious or asleep.
Perrin allegedly found the victim, who appeared to be sick, in a back lot near the 2000 block of South Garey Avenue on Jan. 11, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
He allegedly dragged her to a dark location, sexually assaulted her, covered her with a blanket and left, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The woman — identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as 34-year-old Shaday Olais — was found dead the next day behind the Rio Rancho Mall, at 2001 S. Garey Ave.
The coroner’s office has deferred a determination on the woman’s cause of death pending additional investigation, according to online records.
The investigation into Olais’ death is “ongoing and the results from the LA County Coroner’s Office investigation (are) pending,” Pomona police said last month, adding that it was unknown “to what extent drugs or alcohol may have played in the victim’s death.”
Perrin has remained jailed since his Jan. 14 arrest.
He is due back in a Pomona courtroom April 21 and could face a potential maximum sentence of seven years to life in state prison if he is convicted as charged, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
