Investigators Wednesday asked for anyone who witnessed a mob fight in the Santa Ana River bottom near downtown Riverside that left a 19-year-old man fatally stabbed to come forward.
Raul Saldana of Riverside suffered ultimately deadly wounds during the outbreak of violence about 1:20 a.m. Sunday under a bridge in the area of Market Street and the Pomona (60) Freeway.
Riverside Police Department Officer Ryan Railsback said detectives have since determined that a “large party attended by thousands of people” was underway in the river bottom at the time of the fight.
Saldana was caught in the middle and, along with another man whose name was not disclosed, suffered multiple wounds.
There was no word on what triggered the altercation.
The victims were taken by fellow partygoers to Riverside Community Hospital, where Saldana died in the emergency room. The other man was treated for non-life-threatening wounds and is recovering, according to Railsback.
Detectives said they believe some of those gathered under the bridge may have recorded what happened via their mobile phones, or could otherwise provide eyewitness accounts that advance the investigation, Railsback said.
Witnesses were asked to contact the Robbery-Homicide Unit at 951-353-7134 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
