A 53-year-old man was shot and killed early Thursday in Compton, the second homicide in the city in about five hours.

Deputies responded about 12:05 a.m. to the 1500 block of Kay Street, near Bullis Road, where they found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Deputy Eric Ortiz of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

The coroner’s office identified the man as Ewell Jones, but did not release his city of residence.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear, and no arrests were announced.

Deputies responded about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday to the 600 block of West Corregidor Street, near Central Avenue, on reports of an assault with a deadly weapon where they located a man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Ortiz said.

A motive for that shooting and description of the shooter were not available.

The shooting scenes are less than three miles apart, though investigators do not believe they are connected, according to a sergeant at the Compton Sheriff’s Station who did not give his full name.
