The coroner’s office Sunday released the name of the security guard killed when a hit-and-run driver slammed an SUV into a guard station at the Cabrillo apartment complex in Long Beach.
Derrick Smith was 54 years old and a resident of Los Angeles, according to the coroner’s office.
The crash happened about 3 p.m. Saturday at the Century Villages at Cabrillo apartment complex in the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue, where the guard station was destroyed, according to Long Beach police Lt. Scott Jenson.
Investigators believe the suspect vehicle’s was a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe, from which the driver fled on foot, Jenson said.
Police searched for the driver and were looking at security footage and talking to witnesses to try to identify the suspect.
Century Villages at Cabrillo offers housing to veterans and people who used to be homeless.
