A 24-year-old Santa Ana man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in the shooting death of one man and the wounding of another — believed to be an unintended target — in downtown Long Beach, authorities said Sunday.
Daniel Williams was arrested at about 9 p.m. Saturday by Long Beach police detectives, at his Santa Ana home in the 2900 block of South Bristol Street, the Long Beach Police Department reported.
“Homicide detectives collected evidence of his involvement in the shooting death of Javante Fearance, that occurred earlier that day,” according to a police statement. “At the time of Williams’ arrest, he was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm. Preliminary investigation reveals the suspect and victim were not known to each other prior to the incident.”
Officers dispatched at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday to Broadway and Pine Avenue regarding a shooting came upon an off-duty nurse giving aid to Fearance, suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body, said Arantxa Chavarria, LBPD public information officer.
Paramedics took him to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries, Chavarria said.
Officers also contacted a second shooting victim with a non-life-threatening wound to his upper body. He was treated and later released from an area hospital, she said.
“A preliminary investigation revealed one of the victims and a suspect had been involved in a verbal dispute, which escalated to a shooting,” she said.
Williams allegedly fled on foot northbound on Pine Avenue.
He was arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and carrying a concealed weapon. He was being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the Long Beach Jail. Police said his case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office early next week for filing consideration.
Long Beach police homicide detectives urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to call them at 562-570-7244 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
